Moscow is the biggest economic,
political, scientific and transport centre of Russia. The basis
of the Moscow economy is the richest scientific, technical and industrial
potential of the city. A great number of large enterprises of various
industries operate on its territory. Since 1990 Moscow became the
recognized leader of modern Russian economic reforms. At present
Moscow occupies leading positions in quantity and rating of the
commercial structures engaged in export - import, wholesale and
retail trade. About 1000 commercial banks operate in the capital,
that makes 40 % from the all-Russian number.
Foreign economic relations of the Moscow enterprises extend:
direct industrial, scientific and technical contacts with foreign
partners are established; joint ventures, international associations
and organizations are formed. The activity of joint ventures is
represented by firms from almost forty foreign countries (Germany,
Austria, USA, Canada, Italy etc.). Moscow is cultural and scientific
centre of science of world value. There is a Russian Academy of
Sciences and its 90 scientific institutes, including 78 scientific
research institutes, and also the specialized academies of sciences.
Moscow theatres have received the world popularity - Bolshoy,
Maliy, Art Theatre, theatre named after E. Vakhtangov, Taganka.
The paintings, drawings and sculptures of the Tretyakov Gallery
and the Museum of the fine arts after A.S.Pushkin can compete
with the collections of many famous world museums. Now there are
72 theatres, 109 cinemas, 31 concert halls, 78 museums and 142
expocentres in Moscow. Moreover, Moscow is the biggest educational
centre of the country. Among 85 institutions of higher education
there is 31 university and 19 academies.
